Melissa Nepton’s Sahara desert dream

By M♥

Subtly rocking and waltzing to the sound of Saguenay’s metal & soft rock music band Cellos on Fire (they are amazing), the young and talented fashion designer Melissa Nepton presents her Spring/Summer 2011 collection at Montreal’s Koko Lounge.

Drinks in hand, and munching on delicacies, Gerardine and I took an early day flight to the Saharan desert with this collection. Ooohs, aaahs and hmmms harmonized in the room as the models strut outfits, shoe-ing dark military or sexy open-toed boots. ‘Magnifique’ combination, smartly styled by Montreal’s owned Yso. Needless to say, it was to the majority’s liking. Nepton, known for her smart play with fabric, gives us a soft and admirable transition to her previous much darker and rough on the edges fall collection. Not this time…

For this collection, the designer reacquaints us with light and natural elements such as wind and earth, by using more natural fabric that dance with motion and neutral colors; silk, linen, sandy colors, browns, whites and of course black. While black can be conjugated as cold and monotoned, she found a way to subside these attributes with an edgy grace to transcend a strong attitude… kind of like soft rock!

When asked why she chose to showcase her collection off-Fashion-Week, she explains her wanting to create her own ambiance, lay out her collection on a canvas she would herself fashion. Also the presence of natural lighting was important to her, thus choosing the Koko Lounge as it welcomes in natural light quite fittingly and it was a way to depart from the often-regarded coldness of Montreal Fashion Week venue. And with what was shown, a definite savvy decision.

Because of this collection, I cannot wait for springtime, those white bi-textured leggings, black harem trousers, cocktail dresses and so many other pieces are stuck in my mind… It got me dreaming of wearing one of her off-white cocktail dresses while lost in the middle of the fine sandy desert and someone looking similar to this…

riding this…

takes me out of my lonesome misery. This is what fashion sometimes do, it engenders more creativity… and daydreaming.

Live, Laugh, Love, Be… your own light!
